Who we are

A group of engineers and scientists who study how to turn residual biomass into energy and valuable products, and how to decide which technology is worth it.

Mission

INGEBIR produces scientific knowledge and engineering solutions to turn residual biomass and agro-industrial waste into energy and valuable products, using thermodynamic, kinetic, computational and sustainability-assessment methods of the highest standard. It trains researchers able to compete in the international scientific community and puts its results at the service of society, industry and the energy transition.

Vision 2032

By 2032 INGEBIR will be an A1 group in Colombia's national research ranking (Minciencias) and an international reference in the energy engineering of residual biomass, recognised for the impact of the new knowledge it produces, the rigour of its research, the doctors and masters it trains, and its contribution to sustainable energy development.

Few groups combine what INGEBIR does in a single chain. We characterise a biomass, model its conversion with rigorous thermodynamics and kinetics, predict its behaviour with machine learning and assess the resulting technology in exergetic, economic and environmental terms.

Values

How we work and what our collaborators can expect.

Rigour

Reproducible methods, stated uncertainty, numerical verification and internal review before submission.

Integrity

Fair authorship, correct citation, authentic data and declared conflicts of interest.

Collaboration

Internal co-authorship, peer mentoring and shared credit for the group's achievements.

Openness

Data, code and publications in open access whenever possible.

Relevance

Real problems of society and industry, addressed to international scientific standards.

Excellence with wellbeing

Demanding goals, reasonable workloads and recognition of effort.

Track record

  1. 2021

Daniel Otero Meza and Eduardo Arroyo Dagobeth found the group. In November, Daniel Otero Meza joins a Universidad de Sucre project on biorefineries and waste-to-energy technologies as co-investigator and coordinator.

  2. 2023

First article in Energy Conversion and Management and first participation in the International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management, in Chania.

  3. 2024

The group organises the International Congress on Residual Biomass Valorisation with Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Manizales) and Universidad de la Costa. Co-supervision of Jorge Hernández Ruydíaz's doctoral thesis and the supervision and co-supervision of two master's theses begin.

  4. 2025

A research book, articles in Recycling and Clean Technologies, three talks in Paphos and the first supervised master's thesis, on the techno-economic sustainability of biomethane.

  5. 2026

Eduardo Arroyo Dagobeth earns his doctorate with a laureate thesis, the first co-supervised in the group. Two undergraduate theses on thermochemical conversion receive the laureate distinction, articles appear in BioEnergy Research, Biomass and Urban Science, and the group adopts the name INGEBIR with a strategic plan to 2032 and starts project INGEBIR-P01.

Roadmap 2026 to 2032

The group's strategic plan moves through four phases, from institutional consolidation to international reach.

  1. 2026 – 2027

    Institutional recognition

Consolidate the group's organisation, policies and information systems.

  2. 2027 – 2028

    Consolidation

Produce high-impact knowledge on the conversion of agro-industrial waste and transfer it to communities and industry.

  3. 2029 – 2030

    Scale-up

Expand the training of high-level researchers and take developments from laboratory to pilot scale.

  4. 2031 – 2032

    International reach

Lead research networks and projects with partners in other countries.

How we are organised

The group runs as a knowledge organisation, with governance, defined processes, named owners and indicators.

Members' assembly

Approves the strategic plan, the bylaws and the annual report.

Steering committee

Director, deputy director, programme coordinators and a student representative.

Three programmes

Group the six research lines, each with its own coordinator and agenda.

Support units

Data and scientific information, communication and student research club.

Collaboration networks

Institutions with which the group shares co-authorships, co-supervision and events.

  • Universidad Nacional de Colombia, sede ManizalesCo-authored articles and international talks
  • Universidad de la CostaDoctoral co-supervision, articles and a book
  • Grupo PADES, Universidad de SucreCo-authorship and thesis co-supervision
